1984 Ferrari 512 BBi Berlinetta Boxer

VIN ZFFJA09B000049097

Silver with Black Boxer Trim and Black Interior with Grey Cloth Inserts

The Boxer line represented a remarkable departure for Ferrari. It was the successor to the comparatively conventional Daytona, and Ferrari's first mid-engined flagship. Those who had witnessed Lamborghini`s stunning Miura had been anxiously awaiting Ferrari`s response, and the Boxer did not disappoint. Featuring a horizontally opposed twelve-cylinder motor longitudinally mounted inline with the transmission, it had a low center of gravity placed near the center of mass. Clothed in suitably rakish bodywork by Pininfarina, the Boxer was a stunner. The 512 BBi represents the ultimate development of the Boxer line and was distinguished from the 512 BB and 365 models that preceded it by the introduction of fuel injection, making emissions testing where required much less of a headache than with carburetors. Today, the Boxer remains a dramatic and exciting car that is masculine without being too demanding to drive.

This particular example is a meticulously looked after example that has seen much recent work, including an engine-out belt service, which was completed in June of 2008, and just 500 miles ago. This included the replacement of the tensioners, several oil seals, the exhaust gaskets and donuts, the water pump bearing, and the belts for the ancillaries as well. The work also included replacing the clutch master and slave cylinders with NOS units. Receipts for all parts from Rutlands are included. Other recent work includes some tuning and other work by Patrick Ottis, including rebuilding the distributor (and the replacement of the cap, and advance setup on a Sun machine), replacing all four Konis, resolving miscellaneous electrical issues, resolving some fuel injection issues, and verification of the belt service work. Less recent work includes a conversion back to European specifications since the car was federalized when it first arrived in the United States. During the late 1990`s, the car incurred minor damage to the left side, requiring a repaint. The car was expertly repaired by Autosport Designs on Long Island, New York. At that time, the car was also taken to bare metal and entirely refinished with the original Glasurit paint. Various other jobs were performed as well, including the replacement of the clutch and certain cooling system components, among other items. The car comes with service records back to the late 1990`s indicating the level of care that this car has received.

Cosmetically, the car is in very fine condition. The paint was done to high standards and shows just a handful of small blemishes, only visible upon close inspection. The panels fit well and the glass and lamps are in excellent condition. There is light curb rash to the rear wheels.

The interior is predominantly original, and is well-preserved. Other than part of the driver`s seat, the leather is original with light patina. The leather seating surfaces of the driver`s seat have been redone to high standards. The Zegna supplied cloth inserts and headliner are in good shape, save for a split in the bottom of the driver`s seat. The dash and A-pillar trim are displaying slight shrinkage, and the original stereo and equalizer are still in place. The carpets are in good shape, though there is an area of wear near the pedal cluster.

The engine compartment and front compartment are in very tidy condition and appear as they should. The car is fitted with MSD ignition and Tubi exhaust, and the engine is very dry. One of the heat shields on the inside of the rear clip is starting to expire. The spare and tool pouch are present, as well as an additional zippered pouch for the tool pouch. The car also comes with the jack bag with jack, fuses, spare bulbs with holder, belts, and warning triangle. An original sales brochure is also included, as well as an original manual pouch with manual, as well as the original exhaust system.

This is a fine opportunity to acquire an attractive Boxer in a nice non-red color combination. While it was previously registered in California during the 1990`s, but we found no evidence of BAR certification and are thus offering the car as a 49-state example. This car`s superlative maintenance and obviously fanatical ownership ensures that it is ready to enjoy, and the car has no needs to speak of. It is also extremely complete with records, books, and all tools.
