Paris 12 April, 2012

Following the phenomenal success of this year’s Retromobile sale, which achieved several world record prices, Artcurial Motorcars renews its partnership with Le Mans Classic for a second consecutive sale at the event. The auction will offer around a hundred competition and GT cars including 38 lots from the famous Heuliez collection offered at no reserve.

Led by Matthieu Lamoure, Artcurial Motorcars is the new name at the heart of France’s most prestigious auction house, which, in less than two years, has made its mark in collectors’ car sales in France by achieving several world record prices. Strengthened by these important results and its dynamism and expertise, Artcurial Motorcars is now recognised as a European market leader and competitor on the world stage to the large American auction houses.

Creativity, integrity, experience and a thorough understanding of the market are all qualities possessed by the Artcurial Motorcars team. Every sale offers lots that are fresh to the market, and cars that have important provenance, with many offered at no reserve.

The team at Artcurial Motorcars renews its partnership with ‘Le Mans Classic’ - the most famous historic endurance race in the world. From 6 to 8 July, the Le Mans Classic will bring together 400 racing cars, 1,000 drivers, 10,000 collectors' cars and more than 100,000 spectators for a breathtaking show featuring the keenly anticipated auction held by Artcurial Motorcars.

More than 60 cars have already been entered for the sale :

1992 Peugeot 905 #EV13
Four of these powerful Peugeots competed in the 1992 Le Mans 24 Hours, and they won the top three positions in 1993. They represent the ultimate in competition prototypes of the period. This example was bought by the current owner directly from the factory in 1997 and will be offered without reserve at our auction.

1973 Porsche 911 2,4LS Almeras Frères
This Porsche was fully prepared by the Almeras brothers and is offered at no reserve.

2009 Ferrari 430 Challenge
Exceptional in its competition livery, this 430 has participated in the Ferrari Challenge, chalking up several successes. It has been completely overhauled and has covered just 3,000km from new. No reserve.

1955 Mercedes Benz 300 SL ‘Gullwing’
Delivered new to New York, this car has continuous history through to its current Monegasque owner. It has been the subject of a major mechanical and bodywork restoration giving it an impressive driveability.

The Collection of Madame Sacchi, driver and enthusiast
It is rare to find women passionate about motorsport and one must salute the talents of Madame Sacchi. She competed in rallies and hillclimbs, using either her 1973 Porsche 911 2,7L RS, her Lancia 037 Rally or her Alfa Roméo 1750 GTV, all prepared to be very competitive. She has consigned these cars to our sale hoping that other enthusiasts can benefit.

In this exceptional sale, Artcurial Motorcars will offer prototypes from the Heuliez Collection, the celebrated French coachbuilder.

The 38 remaining cars from the company will be sold without reserve.

1971 Citroën SM Espace by Heuliez
One of just two SM ‘Espace’ examples produced, this was the private car belonging to Monsieur Heuliez, featuring a roof with electric roller panels opening on both sides. It represents an exclusive opportunity for collectors of unique, mythical Citroëns. Offered at no reserve.

1988 WM (Welter et Meunier) P88
One of two WMs that participated in the 1988 Le Mans 24 Hour race. This one, driven by Roger Dorchy, is the most well-known as it broke the speed record at Le Mans achieving a top speed of 405 km/h. This record remains, having been protected by the later addition of a chicane on the Hunaudières straight. A historic automobile offered without reserve.

COLLECTORS’ MOTOR CARS, WORKS OF ART, A GROWING MARKET

The collectors’ car market continues to strengthen its position within the wider art market. Matthieu Lamoure explains:

“Considered for many years as a somewhat vulgar expression of wealth, the automobile has today become an art object, or to those who study the meticulous execution and aerodynamic styling, a work of art, on a par with any masterpiece. At a time when beautiful cars are exhibited in national museums, such as the Ralph Lauren Collection at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, the market itself is in full swing, with record prices rewarding exceptional restoration projects, rare or exclusive models, low mileage or important provenance.

The rising trend of prices over the last ten years has created envy amongst those working the stock market. Take for example the Ferrari 250 California LWB which sold for €4.5-million at the last Retromobile Salon (Artcurial Motorcars sale of 3/2/12). In 2000, the same model was worth approximately €450,000! This sort of example is not rare. In addition, the infrastructure needed to maintain a collection of cars is well established, from distribution to insurance, technical inspections and tax. All of this gives the market a dynamism fuelled by the passion of its enthusiasts, which shows no sign of slowing down.”

Re-cap of a remarkable evolution:
The first major Artcurial Motorcars auction took place at Le Mans Classic in July 2010 and the €7-million sale exceeded expectations. The next auction, ‘Automobiles sur les Champs 1’ in November 2010 achieved an equally impressive result, realising €3.5-million euros, where similar sales traditionally made 600,000 – 800,000 euros!

A second major sale took place in Paris on 4 February 2011, establishing Artcurial Motorcars’ partnership with Retromobile. Some 100 cars were offered including ‘discoveries’ such as the collection of cars belonging to former heads of state, including Général de Gaulle, as well as legendary lots such as the Bugatti Atalante, a private collection of Mercedes from Barcelona, a world record price in the automobilia sale for a Geo Ham….and a sale total of €7.9-million!

‘Automobiles sur les Champs 2’ on 13 June 2011 broke the previous sale’s record at this venue with a €5.3-million sale total. Highlights included the celebrated Jean Serre collection, a wonderful testimony to the golden age of French coachbuilding, and Danny Boon’s Renault 4 prototype built for the film “Rien à déclarer”.

‘Automobiles sur les Champs 3’, on 30 October 2011, sold 90% of all lots, realising a magnificent €2.8-million, proving that the very best cars sell for record prices : the 1955 Mercedes 300 SL Gullwing, estimated at €420,000 – 460,000 sold for €531,400; the 1967 Renault 8 Gordini (estimate €30,000 – 50,000) sold for a world record price of €52,400; record prices were also achieved for the 1963 Facel Vega HK2 (€204,500) and the 1960 Cadillac Series 62 Cabriolet (€71,500).

The most recent sale on 3 February 2012 at the Retromobile Salon realised a record-breaking €14-million, making this the biggest ever sale of collectors’ cars in France.
