Saturday is Laguna Seca day in a packed Monterey schedule! The raceway is a spectacular circuit, noted for the famous “corkscrew” bend, with great viewing facilities, high in the sandy hills between Monterey and Salinas, and always attracts a broad spectrum of great cars to do battle on the track.

One of the feature races was for front engine Indy roadsters, not really best suited to a road circuit, as they only want to turn left! However, they put on great display, and looked spectacular with their beautiful advertising paint jobs which pre-dated commercial sponsorship of race cars in Europe. There was also a race for fifties and early sports racing cars, with likes of Jaguar “D” Types, Lister Jaguars, Maseratis and Ferrari Testa Rossas. Another great race was for FIA Sports Racing and GT cars which concluded the day’s programme, where there was a diverse range of machinery harking back to the seventies. These included the winning Gulf Mirage, numerous Chevrons, a Ferrari 312 P(B), Shelby Mustangs and Cobras, a BMW “Batmobile” and a Ferrari 365 GTB/4C “Daytona” in a lurid yellow and red livery as raced at Le Mans.

With beautiful sunshine, a light breeze and a great selection of cars providing a wide range of aural and visual delights, it was the perfect anecdote to the predominantly static displays of the other gatherings during the week.
