Brooklands, 14 July, 2019

The annual Supercar Sunday was held at its regular venue of the Brooklands Museum complex in Weybridge, Surrey, on Sunday 14 July. Organised by Auto Italia magazine it followed their popular format of displays around the historic museum buildings, with runs on the adjacent Mercedes-Benz World test track prior to the lunch break, followed by runs up the old Test Hill in the afternoon.

Despite some overnight rain and early leaden skies, the gathering attracted a good turnout of a wide variety of machinery, although some was perhaps a little wide of the supercar description. However, that is not to denigrate a range of interesting cars that included a 1969 Vauxhall Viva, which looked very standard and mundane in light blue, apart from slightly wider wheels. However, lifting the bonnet revealed it to be a real Q Car, as it revealed a fuel injected twin cam sixteen valve engine. Another car in a similar vein was a Ford Cortina Mk II Savage, which was a model modified in period by Jeff Uren’s (ex-Willment) Race Proved company, which fitted a 3 litre Ford V6 engine into the standard car, with only discreet badging to hint at the extra power.

There was a strong Ferrari presence, with a variety of predominantly modern models in attendance, including a rare public showing of John Collins’ SP3JC, one of a matching pair of Ferrari F12 TdF based barchettas, built for him by Ferrari’s Special Project division, this being the metallic red and matt grey finished example, chassis # 237530, whilst the other is blue and metallic white, on chassis # 230219, which had put in an appearance at the Goodwood Festival of Speed the previous weekend. Another example that really caught the eye was an electric blue F12 TdF, chassis # 218970, and one of the course cars was a 812 Superfast, chassis # 242327.

There was a fine display of Audi R8s, quite a few Lamborghinis, McLarens, Aston Martins, American muscle in the form of a 5.0 litre Ford Mustang, plus a Chevrolet Camaro and Corvette Stingray. The car that probably attracted the greatest attention was the Koenigsegg Agera 12, which constantly had throngs of admirers around it. There were also what might be termed supercars of their generation, including an AC Aceca coupé and an Aston Martin DB5.
