The middle of August means one thing for classic car enthusiasts worldwide – Monterey, California! For a week the small town on a peninsular just off Highway 1 about two hours south of San Francisco, becomes “motor city” as thousands of motoring enthusiasts descend on it for the numerous events that combine to make up the motoring spectacular that has become one of the highest pinnacles in classic car gatherings. It used to hinge around the historic races at the nearby Laguna Seca race track and the Pebble Beach Concoursd’Elegance, but over the years the scope of the gathering has increased many fold, so that there is something (or things) happening every day of the week. Many people now gather the weekend before for the pre-historic race meeting at Laguna Seca, which is much more laid back than the main event, and for 2007 there is a new concours on Ocean Avenue in Carmel on Tuesday 14 August, the Concours on the Avenue, aimed at catering for cars that don’t get seen at the other concours gatherings, namely Concorso Italiano, The Quail and of course Pebble Beach. The new concours is the brainchild of Doug and Genie Freedman, who for the past three years have hosted a splendid invitation lunch at the marvellous Il Fornaio through their Ocean Avenue Motor Club. Apart from the concours, all the major auction houses, like RM, Bonhams & Butterfields, Gooding & Co and  Christie's hold prestigious auctions during the course of the week, whilst one of the hot tickets is always Gordon McCall’s Airport Party, where private jets, historic aircraft and supercars congregate on the tarmacc, while Champagne is sipped and canapes are nibbled. If you aren’t going this year, and have never had the Monterey experience, then make a note in your diary early for next year, as accomodation is always at a premium. If you’re worried about your significant other being bored with all the cars, don’t, Carmel is a beautiful picturesque town with many exclusive boutiques, Monterey can offer the aquarium and whale watching boat trips amongst its amenities, whilst the scenery on the drive down Highway 1 to Big Sur alongside the Pacific is pretty spectacular.

This year featured marque will be Aston Martin with four dedicated classes.
