The Bonhams auction in Greenwich, CT on Sunday achieved the highest auction price realised for a single motorcar in New England: $1,244,500 for a rare 1965 Ferrari 275 GTB/6C. The tension was palpable, as the 300 + standing room only crowd quieted, anxiously witnessing the volley between bidders for this exceptionally rare lot. Thunderous applause broke out when a front row bidder successfully beat out the world-wide competition!
Bonhams Greenwich Concours d'Elegance Collectors' Motorcars and Automobilia sale totaled over $5 million dollars. Another Ferrari on offer, once owned by rock star Rod Stewart, sold for $330,000!
The auction tent was filled to capacity for the sale, and savvy bidders present were very successful against world-wide absentee competition. The second top lot of the day went to a bidder present in Greenwich, who triumphed over phone, internet and others present to get a very rare left hand drive, original condition 1964 Aston Martin DB5 Saloon with only 37,000 miles from new for $392,000.
A lady seated in the middle section of the tent placed the winning bid of $254,500 for a beautiful 1924 Bentley 3-Litre Sport Tourer, while a 'barn find' and tattered looking 1957 Aston Martin DB2/4 MKII sold to a buyer who came to the site to take a good look at what he was buying for $94,470, demonstrating the strong appeal of the Aston Martin marque, with which Bonhams has enjoyed a long-term relationship.
"The Ferrari is the most valuable car to sell at this venue in 8 years of auctions, and the combined total is the highest for the Greenwich sale as well," Rupert Banner motorcar specialist said. "Presenting an excellent variety of the best collector motorcars to a very knowledgeable and appreciative audience created a spectacular event and record setting auction day. We're grateful to everyone who participated, and the hospitality of the Greenwich Concours d'Elegance organisers."
Successful telephone bidders did acquire the sporting 1955 Porsche 356 Pre-A Speedster for $194,000, and the 1929 Stutz Series M Two-Passenger Speedster for $139,000. A fully restored, matching numbers 1964 Jaguar E Type 3.8 Litre Roadster found a new home in Europe for $128,000. A 1907 Stanley Model EX, in the same ownership for 86 years, was sold to a telephone bidder in the U.K. for $128,000, and the 1919 Locomobile, of Bridgeport, CT manufacture was sold in the room for $65,000 to a private buyer from Denver, CO.
A sharp looking 1956 Packard Caribbean Convertible, from the renowned Beardslee Collection sold for $117,000, along with three other classic motorcars from the same ownership.
A full size replica of an 1885 Daimler Reitwagen – the first gasoline powered motorcycle in the world - sold for $31,250 during the automobilia auction to a museum in Europe where it will be proudly displayed, while
a pair of Rolls-Royce book ends sold for $3,125 more than ten times its presale estimate of $100-$200 to a phone bidder, and an early 1911-1914 Rolls-Royce Spirit of Ecstasy mascot sold for $4,750. Nearly 90 % of the automobilia lots were sold.
Bonhams international motorcars auction calendar takes a leap across the pond to the Goodwood Festival of Speed sale featuring the George Daniels collection on June 29th, and then the team will head west for the next U.S. sale at Quail Lodge, in Carmel, CA on August 16-17th, during the famed Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance event.
