The fifth annual Motor Gallery show took place at the Modena Fiere, conveniently located close to the Modena Nord autostrada exit, over the weekend of 24-25 September. The main feature of the 2017 edition was a celebration of the renowned Modenese artisan craftsman, the late Sergio Scaglietti, with a display of cars carrying coachwork created by him over the years. The organisers also held in a gala dinner honouring him and his craftsmanship in the Palazzo Ducale (Military Academy) on the Saturday evening, where a single Scaglietti bodied Ferrari was displayed under a spotlight in the main courtyard. Outside in the Piazza Roma there was a display of Ferraris forming the letter “S” for Scaglietti and “70” for the 70th anniversary of Ferrari, which was organised in collaboration with the Ferrari Club Italia.

The show itself occupied three halls and their links of the Fiere complex, with a wide variety of cars and motorcycles on display, including a number of rarities within the number. The Scaglietti feature display was in Hall C, and included a Ferrari 340 MM Spider, chassis # 0294 AM, and a pair of Ferrari 275 GTBs, a steel bodied example and an alloy bodied car. Adjacent to this display was a “barn find” auction called “Rottami d’Amore” (Barn Finds My Love), featuring a variety of barn find cars and motor scooters in differing states of neglect, with the area decorated with appropriate props, like bales of hay, straw, dead leaves and rusty gardening implements. Amongst the offerings was a Ferrari 250 GTE body shell, its chassis no doubt having been used as a donor for a replica of a more valuable model, together with a bare 250 GT California chassis/ body unit, from which the chassis number had been cut out, thus losing its identity. Amongst the other offerings was a Ferrari 212 Inter PF Cabriolet body shell, described as PF job # 10933, which would make it from chassis # 0281 EU. There were also a pair of rather distressed Maserati Indys, chassis #s 1044 and 1244, a Maserati Mexico chassis/body unit, chassis # AM 112 1768, and surprisingly, being in Italy, a 1953 Nash Healey and a 1954 Kaiser Darrin. Whichever one you chose, you had a major restoration project on your hands! A portion of the proceeds from the auction were donated to the Italian Union for the Fight Against Muscular Dystrophy (the UILDM).

The display from the paired Ferrari museums, the Museo Enzo Ferrari in Modena, and the Museo Ferrari in Maranello, featured the 166 MM, chassis # 0050 M/0308 M, which was the first Ferrari bodied by Scaglietti for Dino Ferrari, and which was the styling forerunner of the 500 Mondial and 750 Monza series of models. Other local museums with displays were the Panini Collection and the Museo Lamborghini, whilst at the modern end of the spectrum, Pagani displayed a Huayra BC and a Roadster. There was also plenty of variety of offerings on the car club stands, whilst the variety extended even further when one took into account the trade vendor stands, specialist restorers, coachbuilders and upholsterers displays, notable amongst which was the last Lamborghini Miura built, an SV model. Chassis # 5110, displayed on the Cremonini stand. This had special features like an external quick release fuel filler cap through the front lid, with the louvres to the same deleted, and a completely original white leather interior, with the centre console signed by Ferruccio Lamborghini. The Registro Fiat displayed a pair of rare examples of the marque, a 1930 525 SS Viotti bodied Sport/Spider, together with a 1934 Bertone bodied 518 S Spider Coppa Del “Duce”, whilst elsewhere there was another more modern rare example, the 1959 2100 “Popemobile” gifted to Pope Giovanni XXIII by Fiat that year.

The hall to the right of the main entrance was dedicated to a vendor sales area, where one could find almost anything connected with the automobile and motorcycle, ranging from spare parts, through books, brochures, models, tools and a variety of accessories for the classic car and/or driver. This was augmented by a further outdoor sales area featuring predominantly accessories and private car sales.
