LA FERRARI SECONDO FORGHIERI. DAL 1947 A OGGI by Mauro Forghieri and Daniele Buzzonetti

“The most beautiful and important car is the one that I must still build”. The words of Enzo Ferrari when talking about the cars produced by his company bearing his name. Translating this celebrated affirmation into the world of publishing, we would say, “The most beautiful and important book is the one we must still publish”.

Such is the philosophy that has driven and animated Giorgio Nada Editore in over 30 years of activity. From the pioneering books of its debut to the most recent publications, the spirit and the goal of our company have always remained the same: to introduce and popularise the story of the car, the motorcycle and, more in general, engine-powered means of transport as a whole. A story, or rather many stories, that create culture and that recount the technology and techniques of industry, of sporting feats, but most of all of men all able to realise their dreams and nurture their passion.

It was in 1973 that Giorgio Nada acquired the Libreria dell’Automobile in the centre of Milan in the historic building of the Automobile Club of Italy, a stone’s throw from Piazza San Babila and the city’s famous cathedral. A small shop, already known to the enthusiasts of cars and engines, which imports, acquires and sells Italian and foreign volumes on the world of four and two wheels. In the years in which motoring and motor sport publishing was taking its first steps forward and specialist publications were anything but numerous, the Libreria dell’Automobile soon became a point of reference for all lovers of the sector.

Selling books is great, but publishing them under one’s own name is even more so. It was in 1977 when a book appeared on the market that was destined, paradoxically, to become the biggest success of the future publishing house. The volume was entitled “Moto Guzzi” and it was by Mario Colombo, the great historian and enthusiast of Guzzi. Next to the author’s name on the frontispiece was written “Edizioni La Libreria dell’Automobile”.

The ‘Edizioni La Libreria dell’Automobile’ became a reality and, at a rhythm of one or two new publications a year, actually created its own catalogue in which monographs devoted to car manufacturers or single prestigious models alternated with others about motorcycles. A top level stable of authors was immediately established: Michele Marchianò, Angelo Tito Anselmi, Antoine Prunet, Mario Colombo, Roberto Patrignani, Brizio Pignacca, Gianni Cancellieri, Ferruccio Bernabò, Pino Allievi, Gianni Rogliatti and Griffith Borgeson are some of the names among those that began to appear with ever increasing frequency on the covers of the books published by the renowned Milanese book shop.

It was at the end of 1987 when Giorgio Nada saw the need to separate the activities of the Libreria dell’Automobile from that of purely publishing. So the publishing house was born. On the covers and frontispieces of subsequent books, the logo of the Libreria dell’Automobile made way for the armillary sphere and the words Giorgio Nada Editore, the four letters of the surname all in capitals, placed between two thin horizontal lines that mark its boundaries.

Among the titles that made their debut carrying the new logo on their front covers were “Ferrari L’Unico”, written by Gino Rancati a few months after the death of the Grand Old Man in August 1988. But in the pages of the first slender catalogues of the new marque could also be found a luxurious book on Rolls Royce, a monumental work on OSCA, others about Jaguar and Lamborghini, but also works on prestigious body stylists like Zagato, Fissore and Boneschi.

More brief and lively works were devoted to single cars in the series “Le Vetture che hanno fatto la storia” , (The Cars that Created History) which have now been completely updated.

The second half of the 90s proved to be no less significant; it was a period that saw the marque active in a number of major editorial undertakings. At the end of 1996, there appeared a monumental work in two volumes devoted to the production cars of Alfa Romeo, specifying every model from 1910 onwards. The books were written by two great connoisseurs of the company from Arese, Maurizio Tabucchi and Stefano d’Amico. A year later, another important name from the world of journalism, Gianni Cancellieri, took on the responsibility for a volume that was no less pretentious: “Ferrari 1947-1997. Il libro ufficiale”, (“Ferrari 1947-1997. The Official Book”), created together with Karl Ludvigsen. The partner in that operation was Ferrari itself. The Maranello company entrusted Giorgio Nada Editore with this important book project to celebrate the 50th anniversary of its legend. And the third millennium dawned with a recurrence of such a publishing event: the 70 years of Pininfarina, told and illustrated in an official volume that dealt with “art, style and industry”.

To accompany such major works there came a book on the story of Abarth and its creator, another celebrating the 90th anniversary of Carrozzeria Bertone, both by Luciano Greggio – the catalogue rapidly diversified, exploring motoring sectors never before examined until that time.

And to those classic titles on cars, motorcycles plus the unfailing “Formula 1. Analisi tecnica” (Formula 1.  Technical analysis”) compiled each year since 1998 by Giorgio Piola, was added a new series entitled “ Vite da Corsa” (“Racing Lives”) supervised by Gianni Cancellieri, written by Cesare De Agostini and devoted to the deeds of great motor racing champions of the past. New books also appeared on tractors written by authoritative author William Dozza. On the two-wheel front came a large illustrated volume on the Vespa and the illustrated encyclopaedia of the motorcycle, both by Giorgio Sarti that became two editorial events of major importance in those years.

GIUNTI of Florence is a publisher of long, consolidated tradition active since the end of the 19th century and is one of today’s most important Italian publishing groups. Giorgio Nada is now Italy’s leading publisher in the motoring and motor sport field. These two protagonists signed an important agreement at the end of 2006 that brought to life a new publishing and commercial partnership between the prestigious Milanese and Florentine marques.

During the last years, the new association has already led to the publication of important works including: “Ferrari 60”, which appeared in 2007 to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Maranello company;  a complete monograph on ‘Fiat tractors’, Superbike Official Yearbooks, a monumental official work on ‘Alfa Romeo Centenary’ and many others.

ISBN: 978-88-7911-553-7

For the second year running, the young German driver Sebastian Vettel and his Red Bull team were virtually unrivalled, claiming both the Drivers’ and the Constructors’ World Championship titles. Only Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton, both driving for McLaren, put up anything of a fight, while Fernando Alonso in the Ferrari had to settle for a single victory in the British GP at Silverstone. In technical terms, the 2011 season was characterised by the use of a mobile rear wing, the return of Kers and Pirelli as sole tyre supplier. An unmissable annual event for over 10 years, Giorgio Piola’s review returns once again with the well-known illustrator and TV commentator analysing the various phases of the technical development undertaken by the various teams during the championship, with brief but exhaustive texts complemented by hundreds of colour technical drawings. The book is completed with an extensive section devoted to the leading cars for the 2012 season.

Unforgettable victories or burning regrets? Although controversial, the Autodelta era was legendary, a period that deeply affected Alfa Romeo and the world of racing. It was established as little more than a small workshop for the assembly of Giulia TZs but then, because of the energy of the charismatic Carlo Chiti – the originator of many cars and the person who inspired even more anecdotes – it became Alfa Romeo’s official motor racing department: the legendary GTA, the 33, the rally versions of the Turbodelta right through to Formula 1. This work contains the result of high detailed historic research and hundreds of photographs that recount the Autodelta story, comprising two world championships and an infinite series of victories in just about all the categories. As well as a few lost opportunities. FOREWORD BY MARCO TULLIA GIORDANA (film director)

LA FERRARI SECONDO FORGHIERI. DAL 1947 A OGGI by Mauro Forghieri and Daniele Buzzonetti

Many of the Ferrari single seaters and sports racers that won world championships were born of the imagination of Mauro Forghieri and designed by him. That was the case with the John Surtees 1964 158 F1 and the unbeatable Ts of the Lauda-Regazzoni era. The same can be said of the 250 P, the 330 P3 and P4, as well, naturally, as the 312 ‘PB’, the unquestioned protagonists among the sports racing cars of the 1960s and 1970s. The life of the outstanding Mauro Forghieri is told in this book, in which noted stories, especially those that have remained unpublished for years, intertwine in an riveting narrative, supported by a wealth of absolutely unpublished illustrations, a large portion of which come from the publisher’s archives.

This in the briefest of terms is the Mille Miglia, the race par excellence; the marathon that for almost three decades traversed Italy, bringing to the nation’s roads stars of the calibre of Varzi and Nuvolari, Biondetti and Fangio, Ascari, Moss and Taruffi driving for the likes of Alfa Romeo, Mercedes-Benz, Lancia and Ferrari. The book draws on a wealth of photographic documents, in particular for the post-war editions, from the Novafoto-Sorlini Archive, an important collection featuring the shots taken by the official race photographer, Alberto Sorlini, between 1947 and 1957. ALI/WINGS - Their design and application to racing cars by Enrico Benzing

Size: 24.3x27 - Pages: 284 - Photos: 12 in b/w and 35 in colour + plenty of technical drawings and illustrations - Softbound with flaps - Text: Italian- English

ISBN: 978-88-7911-539-1

After the wing plane revolution on racing cars that began in 1966 (1968 in Formula 1) and the appearance of ground effect in 1977, aerodynamics took on a front line role on the track with winged cars, switching from traditional studies of resistance to advancement to the exploitation of negative lift in order to increase speed through the corners.
In this new edition of the first book to appear on the subject in 1991 by Enrico Benzing, one of the best known engineers in the world of Formula 1, this complex subject is explained with completeness and simplicity of expression, so that it can be read and understood by everyone. The motor racing wing is at the centre of the story, while the picture is completed by the entire aerodynamic behaviour of the racing car, especially the single seater, touching on particular aspects such as the Magnus effect, ground effect, calculation of power resistance and matters related to the wind tunnel.
Compared to the first edition, this second volume is completed by a specific chapter on CFD (fluid dynamics computation).
Hundreds of illustrations enhance this work, which is an indispensible starting point for people who want to know all about this complex but fascinating subject.

FIAT TRACTORS. FROM 1919 TO THE PRESENT by William Dozza/Massimo Misley

Size: 25x30 cms - Pages: 248 - Photos: 70 in b/w and 396 in colour - Hardback with jacket - Text: English

ISBN: 978-88-7911-536-0

Fiat’s first agricultural tractor was presented to the civil and military authorities of Turin in 1918 and marketed the following year by the Federation of Agricultural Consortia. Thus began, 90 years ago, Fiat’s activity in the agricultural sector, in which it is now a global player with the CNH-Case-New Holland marque. This book uses original photographic documentation to illustrate the origins and development of the company’s agricultural products, tackling the technical and human aspects of a story that has seen the introduction of over 500 models since 1918. This is the first comprehensive study of the Turin-based firm’s history in the agricultural sector. This updated edition includes all the new Holland new series presented from 2008 up to 2011. In 240 pages, with a vast range of black and white and full colour photographs, it presents an overview of a fascinating yet still relatively neglected side of the company. An indispensable work for collectors, enthusiasts and the merely curious.
