Annecy sur Lac, 08 October 2009

The former Renault F1 Team Sporting Director and passionate classic car enthusiast, Jean Sage succumbed to a long battle with cancer on 08 October 2009. Although his strong character and opinions made him unpopular in some quarters, he was one of motor racing’s great characters and will be sorely missed on the classic car scene, which he supported actively and strongly right up until a few weeks before his untimely passing.

It may be presumptuous of me to call him a friend, but I knew him for a number of years through his connections with the Ferrari world, where he was involved with the F40 racing project with Pozzi Ferrari France and then as one of those initially involved in the Historic Challenge Series. I always found him to be most helpful and accommodating in the sharing of information, always with a wry sense of (often sarcastic) humour, which he could express in perfect English. I recall one particular occasion a few years ago, when leaving a dinner at Moet & Chandon in Reims after a Ferrari anniversary, he saw me with one of those with whom he had crossed swords, and I went over to greet him and he said “I see you are walking with the enemy”, with a wicked grin on his face! There was obviously no malice, and whenever our paths crossed, usually at a motor race meeting or car show, he would always greet me with a broad smile and have time for a chat. He gave a lot to the world of motor sport, was deeply passionate about it, and will be sorely missed by me and countless others.
