Created 2007
The 166 Sport was the closed body “road-going” version of the 166 Spider Corsa, and as such had a lower state of tune engine, normally with only a single twin choke Weber 32 DCF carburettor, as opposed to the triple carburettor set up of the “competition” car.
The model was built during 1948, and it is believed that a total of three examples were constructed in the odd chassis number range 001S – 005S, the first two having Allemano coupe bodywork, and the final model a coupe body by Carrozzeria Touring of Milan. The latter car was shown at the 1948 Turin Salon, and is believed to be the oldest “road-going” Ferrari in existence. It has been in Italian ownership all its life, and is frequently on display in the Galleria Ferrari in Maranello. The previous two Allemano bodied cars are both understood to have been destroyed and scrapped during the fifties. An Allemano coupe bodied example won the 1948 Mille Miglia road race, driven by Biondetti/Navone, a result that brought international recognition to the young Italian company.
