Outstanding Pre-war Automobiles and a One-off Ghia-built Chrysler at Top of Worldwide’s Scottsdale Sales

It was full house at Worldwide’s annual boutique evening sale at the start of Arizona auction week last Wednesday, January 15th, with 76% of consignments finding new homes in a packed salesroom. The Scottsdale Auction showcased a meticulously curated selection of rare and iconic muscle cars, European sports and classics, concept cars and another outstanding private collection encompassing an offering of exceptional pre-war cars. High sale went to a wonderfully restored 1936 Auburn 852 SC Boattail Speedster from The Chuck Morgan Estate Collection that brought $880,000, one of fewer than ten 1936 ACD certified Speedsters.

Selling for an impressive $742,500 was the 1956 Chrysler Ghia Plainsman Concept Car, a one-off Chrysler show car built by Ghia of Italy that attracted significant interest, extensively documented and fully restored to its original western motif including genuine cow-hide interior. Another fine automobile with excellent provenance and ACD Certification from The Chuck Morgan Estate Collection was a wonderful 1930 Duesenberg Model J Berline with coachwork by Willoughby that sold for $605,000. Offered for sale from the same collection was the 1937 Packard Twelve 1508 ‘Bette Davis’ Convertible Sedan, purchased new by Warner Bros. Jack Warner as a gift for actress Bette Davis that realized $451,000. European sports cars on offer included an exceptionally rare 1997 Porsche 911/993 Turbo S, going to a new home for $341,000.

“Our commitment to bringing the very best cars of their type to market remains stronger than ever, as does our dedication to showcasing world-class, no-reserve private collections,” said Rod Egan, Principal and Auctioneer. “We don’t insist on only selling the most expensive cars in the world but we absolutely do stipulate that those we offer epitomize the finest of their kind, from pre-war automobiles through American and European classics and sportscars.”

The Scottsdale Auction took place at 5pm on January 15th 2020 at a new location in Singh Meadows in Tempe, Arizona, to which it will return in 2021.
