1926 Bentley 6.5 Litre (Est - £350,000-450,000)
1927 Bentley 3 Litre Speed Model Tourer (Est - £150,000-200,000)
H&H is currently still accepting entries for its auction of Excellence in Engineering that’s being held in the glorious surroundings of Rockingham Castle on June 16, but the current headline vehicles are without doubt a pair of stunning vintage Bentleys – a 1926 6.5 Litre Le Mans-style Tourer and a 1927 3 Litre Speed Model Tourer with coachwork by Vanden Plas.
The 6.5 Litre, which carries an estimate of £350,00-450,000, was extensively restored by renowned marque specialist Tony Townshend for the late Steve O’Rourke – a successful historic racing driver but best known for managing the incomparable rock band Pink Floyd for no less than 35 years. The Bentley’s engine has been uprated and is these days fed by a trio of SU carburettors. This most imposing of vintage motorcars is finished in traditional British Racing Green teamed with Green leather upholstery and is being sold complete with the appropriate registration ‘RR 4634’.
The 3 Litre is a ‘matching numbers’ Tourer that started life as a demonstrator for the Princess Motor Company of Plymouth before being sold to the World Land and Water Speed record breaker (Sir) Malcolm Campbell during 1928. Commending chassis BL1607 in the July 1945 issue of Motor Sport magazine, Major C.A.H. recalled that the car ‘was kept in perfect tune by Bentley Motors (1931) Ltd and had only covered 46,000 miles at the time of purchase’. He also boasted of its ability to do the run from Winchester to Oxford ‘in one hour dead late on the night of the Naval Review, 1937’. This Bentley carries an estimate of £150,000-200,000.
Commenting on this, the second of H&H’s new ‘Specialist Sales’, the company’s Sales Manager Damian Jones said: “The opportunities to purchase a 6.5 Litre Bentley are few and far between and ‘RR 4634’ is certainly presented in fine order, while the 3 Litre Speed Model is quite simply one of the most original we have encountered.”
