Brooklands, Surrey, 28 July, 2018

The Brooklands museum complex hosted Supercar Saturday on 28 July, with a good turnout of a wide variety of machinery, although some were perhaps stretching the meaning of “supercar” somewhat. That said, it made for an interesting array of cars on display, and attracted a large number of visitors over the course of the day. Part of the attraction of these events at Brooklands are the demonstration runs on the adjacent test track in Mercedes-Benz World, and the runs up the old test hill during the afternoon. There is a also the bonus of the Mercedes-Benz “Silver Arrows” display team, who gave a show on the skid pad prior to the groups taking to the track, with controlled power slides at both high and low speeds, together with rubber burning entries and exits to and from the pad.

There were plenty of modern Aston Martins, Ferraris, Lamborghinis, a surprising number of RHD Ford Mustangs, a sprinkling of McLarens plus other exotica rarely seen on the public highway, to satisfy most tastes, whilst the undoubted star attraction was a Ferrari LaFerrari, finished in F1 red, which attracted so many “sticky fingers” that it had to be cordoned off. It is probably fair to say that next up in the popularity stakes were a metallic yellow Ferrari 812 Superfast, a white Lancia Stratos and a metallic purple Lamborghini Aventador. Amongst the Lamborghini contingent was a nice dark blue Urraco, a number of Huracans in a variety of colours, including some Performante variants, together with an example of the new Urus SUV finished in bright yellow. There was a nice Ferrari 512 BB, the oldest example of the marque in attendance, but of the older supercars, it was probably Aston Martin who shone. There was a pair of DB6s, a Vantage V600 and an example of the William Towns designed Aston Martin Lagonda in bright red, the four door supercar of its day, the first production car to feature a digital dashboard. Alfa Romeo was represented by a pair of SZ models, a 4C and a 8C, whilst there was a selection of TVRs and also a Noble M12 GTO 3, plus an Ultima Spider, definitely not something that you see every day.
