WorldWide's Auburn Auction 90% Sell-Through lead by $1 Mio for 1935 Auburn 851 SC

Auburn, Indiana. September 9th, 2020. Worldwide concluded an upbeat 13th annual Auburn Auction at home in Indiana this Labor Day Weekend, with 90% of consignments finding new homes, including three extraordinary collections. High sale went to a meticulously restored and multiple award winning 1935 Auburn 851 SC Boattail Speedster with body design by Gordon Buehrig that realized $1.072 million. The celebrated Stainless Steel Trifecta sold for $1.045 million, representing a once-in-a-lifetime chance for a collector to acquire a trio of historic vehicles first conceived by the pioneering stainless steel producer Allegheny Ludlum, Inc. in collaboration with the Ford Motor Company in 1935. Built to showcase the extreme durability and aesthetic appeal of the new metal and comprising a 1936 Ford Deluxe Sedan, 1960 Ford Thunderbird and 1967 Lincoln Continental Convertible, the trifecta was offered as one lot.

Capturing the absolute essence of coachbuilt beauty was a one-off 1936 Cadillac ‘Shangri-La’ Custom Roadster by Rick Dore, with hand-formed aluminum body fabricated by Marcel Custom Metal that bought an astonishing $550,000. Smaller, but no less perfectly formed, was a captivating all-steel, faultlessly scaled Duesenberg Pedal Car that sold for a record price of $27,500. Created by the noted late Don Dettmer of Auburn, one of only four ever built, it was purchased many years ago by the current owner as a gift for his granddaughter and proceeds from its sale will now go toward her college education.

The Auburn Auction delivered nearly $8 million in total sales. “We extend sincere thanks to all of those who helped to make our 13th annual sale at home in Auburn such a terrific success, to both our in-person bidders and to the absentee and ‘virtual’ collectors from around the world who have demonstrated that the market for great collector cars is still strong,” said John Kruse, Principal and Auctioneer.

Presented as both a live and online event, the Auburn Auction offered options for every comfort level, with onsite bidding, online bidding available via three online partner platforms, and absentee and telephone bidding available to pre-registered, qualified buyers.
