Gooding & Company, the auction house acclaimed for selling the world’s most significant and valuable collector cars, is pleased to report its year-end auction sales total of more than $147 million. In 2019, company led all auction houses with a notable 82% sales rate with 291 lots sold, and 32 cars selling above the $1 million mark. Notably, the renowned auction house was once again the market-leader with the highest per car average sale of $505,537 from its three respected auctions. This year saw Ferraris dominate the market, with over $75 million sold by Gooding & Company at an average price of $1,390,364. The auction house also experienced its highest ever viewership via its live HD webcast, with thousands of car enthusiasts from over 115 countries streaming Gooding & Company’s three exciting auction events.

The heralded auction house’s significant sales this year consisted of the 1958 Ferrari 250 GT LWB California Spider selling for $9,905,000, a 1963 Ferrari 250 GT SWB Berlinetta which sold for $7,595,000, and a 1958 Ferrari 250 GT Series I Cabriolet achieving a final price of $6,800,000. The SWB Berlinetta sold in the Scottsdale Auctions and both the California Spider and Series I Cabriolet found new homes at the 2019 Pebble Beach Auctions to close out an excellent year of sales during a transitional time in the market where prices saw some correction from the steady ascension of recent years.

In January 2019, several world-auction records were set and nine cars sold over $1 million at Gooding & Company’s Scottsdale sale. The auction house sold the top three most expensive cars during the Arizona Auction week which included the 1963 Ferrari 250 GT SWB Berlinetta that sold for $7,595,999, the 1958 Ferrari 250 GT Tour de France Berlinetta that brought in $5,890,000, and the 1953 Ferrari 250 MM Spider Series II that prompted an exciting bidding war and ultimately sold for a world-auction record $5,395,000. 

The Amelia Island Auction 

  • $22,047,980 million in total sales
  • Six cars sold over $1 million
  • 78 of 89 lots sold

In March, Porsches reigned supreme at Gooding’s 10th annual Amelia Island sale, specifically with the Jan Koum Collection offering ten limited-production motorsport models that spanned nearly 25 years of the marque’s excellence. Sold without reserve, the collection, highlighted by the 2015 Porsche 918 Spyder Weissach which sold for $1,490,000, energized the packed tent. The auction’s top-selling lot, a 1930 Packard 734 Speedster Runabout which hit $1,765,000, helped the company finish with the highest sell-through rate across all auction houses from that weekend with an astonishing 88%.

The Pebble Beach Auctions 

  • $76,824,740 million in total sales

At its 16th annual August sale as the official auction house of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance®, Gooding & Company continued to offer only the highest quality cars and maintained the highest sell-through rate for the week. In addition to selling four of the top ten sales across all auction houses and generating over $76 million in total sales, the company also set significant world-auction records. The stars of the weekend were most notably the 1975 Ferrari 312T and the 1958 Ferrari 250 GT LWB California Spider. The Ferrari 312T garnered thunderous applause from the packed tent when it sold for $6,000,000. This Grand Prix-winning masterpiece qualified in pole position in each of the five races driven by the legendary driver Niki Lauda. The California Spider was offered with highly desirable features that included covered headlights, Classiche certification, numerous awards, a stunning color scheme, as well as period racing. One of only 50 original long-wheelbase versions, this stunning automobile reached the final price of $9,905,000 to become not only Gooding & Company’s biggest sale of the weekend, but for all of 2019 at auction. 

2019 Private Treaty Sales
