General Motors designer Harley Earl loved sports cars and was influenced by the GI’s bringing home MGs, Jaguars, Alfa Romeos and the like after hostilities ceased in Europe in 1945. Even the small independent carmaker, Nash Motors, began selling a two seater sports car in 1951. Earl convinced GM that they also needed to build a two seat sports car. Earl and his 'special projects' crew began working on the new car later that year which was code named 'Opel'. The result was the 1953 Corvette, which took its name from a small, manoeuvrable fighting frigate, and was unveiled to the public at that year's Motorama Car Show.
We are informed this car originally came from California, owned by a Bob Campbell in the 1980's and 1990's who then sold it to a friend of his, Jerry Conway, in 2005. After Mr Conway passed away, our vendor purchased the car in 2017 from Jerry's daughter in Oregon; hence it was re-registered in Oregon prior to export. Built in the final year of production for the first generation which many consider to be the best of the C1's, the car comes with the desirable 327 cubic inch, 340bhp, 5.7 litre small block, V8 and is considered a very collectable car. Our vendor, who resides in Ireland, has had the car registered on Irish plates 62 D 120002 ever since but, due to lack of space, needs to find his pride and joy a new loving home. This lovely example is finished in red and white with a red interior and a white hood and has the accompanying hard top. The odometer displays 32,000 miles which are believed to be genuine and, having been restored, we are informed the original engine also runs well. It was serviced in 2018, and comes with a new battery, spark plugs and revived electrics which includes a sports coil. This American classic is offered with Irish registration documents with all taxes paid, original certificate of title, handbook and owner’s guide, spare keys and paperwork. Driven regularly but stored in a dry garaged environment, this is a great opportunity to own and enjoy a true icon.]]
