Known History

Engineered by Giulio Alfieri, the 3500 GT remains historic as Maserati’s first true series-production road model. Two versions were offered, with the Spider’s open coachwork supplied by Vignale and the Superleggera (Super light) Coupe constructed by Touring. Production spanned from 1958 to 1964 with as few as 2,223 built. Only 242 Spiders were produced, most equipped with Weber carburetors and later examples featuring Lucas fuel injection. All featured a short-wheelbase chassis and elegant styling by Giovanni Michelotti.

The product of a long-term restoration to concours quality, this 1961 Maserati 3500 GT Spider features the early specification Weber three-carburetor intake system with desirable late-production features such as front disc brakes and a five-speed manual gearbox.

The car’s provenance is documented by copies of original production paperwork supplied by Maserati Classiche, as well as the individual chassis entry published in Walter Bäumer’s definitive book, Maserati 3500 GT Spyder by Vignale . According to factory build records, this 3500 GT Spider, chassis AM101.1317, was completed on July 21, 1961, and delivered to Maserati dealer AUTOMAR S.r.l., in Florence, Italy, where it was sold to its first owner Anna Stchastchawinski. Subsequently, the Maserati was acquired by a member of the US military stationed in Europe, who shipped the car to Utah, before passing into the ownership of Michael Mower, also of Utah, by the latter 1970s. In December 1979, the Vignale Spider was acquired by the consignor, a Southern California- based collector with a passion for coachbuilt Italian sports cars.

An incredibly detailed, long-term restoration was initiated during the 1980s to concours standards and completed in August 2013, in time for the Spider’s debut at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering in Monterey. In March 2017, the Maserati was shown at the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance, garnering the Buddy Palumbo Corporate Award for best restoration performed by an owner. Media coverage includes Viale Ciro Menotti, the official magazine of the Maserati Club International, with this 3500 GT Spider the cover subject for Issue no. 106 and the subject of a photo-essay for Issue no. 112.

As offered, this 3500 GT Spider is resplendent with a color change from its sober factory-original Grigio Metalizzato (Metallic Grey) to the present dark red. Upholstery is tan Connolly leather as original, verified by a sample. Accents include a black convertible top with completely restored folding mechanism, a tan boot cover, Nardi steering wheel, jewel-like instrument cluster, ventilated disc-type wheels, and a myriad of fine and thoroughly researched detail items.

In addition to tools and a roadside jack, this incredibly rare Maserati 3500 GT Spider includes a wealth of documents. Among them are the aforementioned copies of production records from Maserati Classiche, the Walter Bäumer chassis record, an original Maserati 3500 GT parts catalogue, factory sales brochure, restoration and post-restoration photos, an illustrated restoration chronology and correspondence with Maserati Classiche affirming the originality of the engine to the vehicle.

Exceedingly rare, beautifully restored, and exceptionally well documented, this 1961 Maserati 3500 GT Spider will provide a welcome entry to a wide array of worthy events, while offering a decidedly glamorous touring experience.
