Across the Atlantic, it's called Dodge, but in Europe, it's a Chrysler!
Two years after the private initiative of the "Rent a Car" team, the Viper made its official return to Le Mans in 1996 under the name Chrysler. This was not the brand's debut at Le Mans, as it had already made its mark there before the war, and later supplying the engines for the spectacular Cunningham cars from 1951 to 1954. The Viper GTS-Rs entered in 1996 are very different from the Viper R/T 10s seen in 1994, as they were designed by the factory under the direction of Neil Hannemann and entrusted to private teams. The Viper GTS-Rs made their debut at Daytona with Canaska-Southwind Racing, then at Jarama in the colors of the Oreca team. Driven by the Gache-HÚlary team, the car had a promising start but was forced to retire during the race. The Viper GTS-R is built from a chassis manufactured by Reynard Motorsport, retaining only the line of the road car. Hugues de Chaunac, the boss of Oreca, sees it as a promising project for his team. The Viper program was an incredible story, at a time when Oreca was not yet what the team has become," recalls Hugues de Chaunac. We were still growing. Somehow, we were students. We came across a big American manufacturer, who trusted us, and who gave us a car that was anything but a race car, and who said to us: "Do what you have to do, but do it!" As a reminder, at the time, the reference in GT was Porsche.".
The gamble paid off. In 1997, the Vipers won the FIA GT2 title. Then in 1998 and 1999, they won Le Mans, the FIA GT titles, and the American championship in 1999. By 2000, then, the Viper GTS-R was a mature car that had become the benchmark for GT. We started from scratch and made the Viper a winning machine," continued Beretta. It's a dream for every driver! A dream that will be transformed into an apotheosis, in January, on the Daytona circuit. Against the prototypes, with cars that are playing for the overall win, the Viper will fight... on a regular basis.
Our VIPER Chassis C3
Raced under the number 94 with the ORECA team at the 1997 Daytona 24H in GTS1 with a white livery and blue GTS stripes. Unfortunately, the gearbox had an internal failure, which put the car out of the race for the victory. It finished 15th and 3rd in GTS1 with the Dupuy/Beretta/Hanemann team. It then participates with number 63 in the ORECA team in the 1997 24H of Le Mans in GT2 with a white livery, blue GTS stripes and blue and red stripes on the doors, where it finishes 14th overall and 1st of the 3 Vipers of the team driven by Justin Bell / Pierre Yver / John Morton. It was back in the FIA GT as number 52 at the NŘrburgring Grand Prix, It was number 51 with Orion Motorsport at Silverstone in 1998 in the first round of the British GT Championship in GT2, with the same white livery and blue GTS stripes. At the second round at Oulton Park, the livery was changed to a monotone bright red appearance with yellow sponsor text highlighted, with the number 51 taking the class win. Points scored in this race helped Kurt Luby and Richard Dean win the 1998 British GT Series GT2 championship. The C3 then competed as the No. 10 in two Spanish GT races in 1999 with the Chrysler Viper/Chamberlain team, winning the first event. Then stored in the United States by its owner, It was restored in 2012 by the next owner and appeared at the Le Mans Classic in its 1997 24H du Mans ORECA livery #63. In 2019, the car is actively participating in historic races in Europe. Meticulously restored and prepared for its current owner, a fine driver and demanding collector, our Viper is ready to return to the track in 2022.
Its engine, freshly overhauled, develops nearly 640HP for 820NM of torque! The safety and crack tests are up to date, as well as the technical passport.
