The result of Ettore Bugatti's mechanical and artistic genius, the Bugatti Type 35 is the Bugatti par excellence. It was the archetypal Grand Prix car of the 1920s and, together with its derivatives, created the Molsheim legend that is still so strong today.

The Bugatti Type 35 made its debut in 1924 at the ACF Grand Prix in Lyon. A milestone in Bugatti history. It caused a sensation with its slender and elegant design, despite its two-seater configuration, which was made compulsory by the Grand Prix regulations, which required the presence of a mechanic on board. Its sublime lines attracted all eyes, as did its famous cast aluminium wheels including the brake drum, a considerable innovation which appeared for the first time on a Grand Prix car. Five cars were entered! However, this first race was hardly a success. Although the cars broke records in practice, they were beaten by their competitors in the race. It was later discovered that the cause of these poor results was neither the engine nor the mechanics, but the tyres, which were not properly vulcanised and did not withstand the high speeds. The first Bugatti Type 35 could only finish seventh.
It was not until the next race in San Sebastian that a Bugatti Type 35 reached the second step of the podium, heralding the beginning of an unparalleled sporting career.

It was also the start of a brilliant commercial career, as Bugatti sold this 1920s Formula 1 to its customers. The Bugatti Type 35 went on to win countless victories, including the World Championship title in 1926 and five consecutive victories in the Targa Florio from 1925 to 1929. After production was stopped in 1930, the car allowed amateur drivers to showcase their skills and make a name for themselves (Amédée Gordini, Maurice Trintignant or Raymond Sommer).

The Type 35 was not just a racing car. It was a real technical achievement: its designer, Ettore Bugatti, combined a double roller bearing and a triple ball bearing for the first time - the crankshaft is still considered an engineering treasure today. A speed of up to 6,000 rpm sets the eight cylinders of the engine, which originally had a displacement of only 2.0 litres, in motion. The result: the fastest car ever created at that time. By using two carburettors instead of one, power is increased to around 95 hp. A wet multi-plate clutch enabled power transmission. With this engine, the first Type 35 could travel at over 190 km/h. The most affordable basic type, the 35 A was equipped with a 2.0-litre, 75 hp eight-cylinder engine. In later versions, the 35 B with a 2.3-litre eight-cylinder engine and a supercharger, 140 hp was achieved. The Bugatti could reach speeds of over 215 km/h. In addition to their high output, the engines were distinguished above all by their reliability and longevity.

Ettore Bugatti realized as early as the early 1920s that even with a high output, a heavy car would not be very successful. Like no other at the time, he therefore relied on a lightweight structure and optimal driving characteristics. For the first time, Bugatti developed special lightweight wheels to reduce the unsprung mass and thus improve the suspension behavior. The cast aluminium wheels with eight flat spokes, removable rims and integrated brake drums are a real innovation. A centring ring prevented the tyre from coming off the rim.

In addition, Bugatti designed a new forged hollow front axle with sealed ends. Weighing about ten kilograms, the axle was light yet stable. It rarely broke. The unsprung weights were further reduced allowing the Type 35 to be faster in the corners. In operation, the race car weighed about 750 kilograms. All Bugatti models were pure racing cars, but on request the manufacturer also fitted mudguards and headlights for use on public roads.
In addition, the design was pure and elegant - sculptural, like the entire vehicle. The elegant, well-proportioned body, with its light, slender chassis and slender rear end, was made of a special alloy developed by the manufacturer. The wide radiator, flattened at the bottom, gave the Type 35 an imposing appearance on the road. It is no coincidence that the Type 35 is considered the most beautiful racing car of its time.

The use of a Roots supercharger in 1926 increased the power of the Type 35 to 140 hp. This made the car not only light and flexible, but also extremely powerful. In order to adapt the new compressor to the aesthetic appearance of the engine compartment, Bugatti redoubled its design efforts. Beauty comes from within, as Ettore Bugatti already knew more than 90 years ago.

The Bugatti Type 35 (the number corresponds to the number of the study) was to be developed into several prestigious derivative models. The Type 35 C is a 35 with a Roots-type compressor designed by the engineer Moglia, which increases the power to 150 hp. The latter also made the engine smoother. As the first supercharged Bugatti, it is for many the best of the 35.

In 1926, Bugatti entered a Type 35 in the Targa Florio, whose displacement was increased to 2.3 litres by increasing the stroke from 88 to 100 millimeters. The car became Type 35 T (T for Targa). Few examples were built due to the two-litre limit for Grand Prix cars.

Launched in 1927, the 35 B appeared as a 35 T (2.3 litres) with the same compressor as the 35 C. Officially named Type 35 TC, it kept the name 35 B given to it by the Molsheim design office. Slightly more powerful than the 35 C, it remains without doubt the most desirable of the Bugatti Type 35s.

The 35 A was launched in 1925 under the name "Course imitation 35 A" - it was nicknamed Técla after a brand of imitation jewellery. It was a tuned down model, whose main advantage was its reliability and simplicity of maintenance, which were superior to those of the 35. The car is powered by an eight-cylinder engine similar to that of the Type 30, It has small valves and ignition is by distributor (instead of a magneto on the 35). The front axle is solid and the wheels are spoked, alloy wheels being optional.

About 340 Bugatti 35s were built until 1930. Approximately because Ettore Bugatti usually delivered cars that were already in use at the factory, which led to a certain lack of clarity in the chassis numbers. The 35 was not the best in every respect, but it was the most complete and consistent. An exceptional quality that gave birth to the myth of the Molsheim thoroughbred.

The Bugatti we present is a Bugatti 35 A born in 1925. Its history in the 1930's is not known but our car can be found in the 1950's registered in Isère. The present owner, an active collector of pre-war cars, bought the car in 1998 as a rebuilding project with a chassis, body and engine of the correct type but with unknown provenance. He found our 35 in a very sad but complete state. He then undertook a long rebuild to give it a second life. First of all, Mr Pacic rebuilds the car using existing parts when possible or new parts available on the market to replace the missing or out of order parts. The bodywork and upholstery are entrusted to the good care of Jean-Luc Bonnefoy who readjusts the so particular line of this Bugatti Grand Prix. After a few years of use, the renowned Novo garage took over the car. It is in the expert hands of Jean and Frederic that our car receives the last mechanical care necessary for a regular and sportive use. Since then, our Bugatti 35A has been driven from rally to rally under the watchful eye of Fred Novo, who is responsible for its maintenance. With a French registration of the correct type "35A", our Bugatti is waiting for the owner who wants to share the next years in its company.
