Entire Racing Team Offered for First Time at Goodwood Revival Sale

Goodwood, 28 August, 2021

An entire team of one of the great sporting marques of the golden era - 1920s racing Lagondas- which campaigned at Brooklands and Le Mans, is offered for the first time at the Bonhams Goodwood Revival Sale on 18 September.

Four 1929 Lagonda 2.0-litre Low Chassis are returning to a motor circuit more than 50 years after being reunited in a significant single-owner collection.

The quartet, bearing consecutive registration numbers PK9201 to PK 9204, was originally owned by a syndicate of Hertfordshire enthusiasts and run by Fox & Nicholl, the Lagonda main dealer in Tolworth Surrey, in that year's racing season. The team made a mark on their debut outing at the gruelling Brooklands Double Twelve endurance race, placing second, third and sixth in their class.

Later in the season the quartet campaigned that year's BARC Six-hour race and the Tourist Trophy, where PK 9202 finished 9thoverall, leading the Lagondas to win the Team Prize and Mobiloil cup. One of the four, PK 9203 even entered the Le Mans 24 Hours, with Tim Rose Richards and the Hon Brian Ellis at the wheel.'

Following their retirement in 1930, the four were sold off to different owners and then reunited in the late 1960s and early 1970s when acquired by the late Captain Ivan Forshaw and his son Richard. Captain Forshaw made his name as a Lagonda specialist in the 1930s and would later establish Aston Service Dorset.

All four Tourers were restored in the 1990s and then kept under covers in the Poole showroom, only taken out for shows such as the Century Display at Brooklands. They are currently being recommissioned for the road and are each offered with an estimate of £200,000 – 300,000, (£300,000 – 400,000 for PK 9203).

Tim Schofield, Head of Department, Bonhams Motor Cars UK, said: "We are delighted to offer this collection which was the particular pride and joy of Captain Forshaw, a lifelong Lagonda enthusiast. This is a unique opportunity to acquire an entire racing team from the golden era. With their racing pedigree, we hope to see at least one of the four on track at next year's Revival."

Returning to the Goodwood Motor Circuit for the first Revival Sale since 2019, Bonhams is offering another returnee, a 1956 Jaguar D-Type Sports-Racing Two-Seater, estimate £900,000 – 1,200,000, which has participated in the Revival on several occasions, and the Mille Miglia Retrospective.

Pairing up with the D-Type is an example of its 1990s spiritual successor - a 1993 Jaguar XJ220, prepared by Don Law racing. Like the D-Type, the XJ220 also campaigned at Le Mans, winning the GT class of 1993, while on the road, was the fastest production car of its day reaching speeds of 200mph. This example, supplied new to Germany, has only covered 385 miles and has an estimate of £400,000 – 500,000.

The Bonhams Goodwood Revival Sale will take place in its traditional location 'over the road' at the West Sussex Motor Circuit on Saturday 18 September, (automobilia from 11.00 and motor cars from 13.00).

It will be a fully live sale with bids accepted from clients in the room (respecting social distancing and all local COVID-related guidelines) and will be livestreamed via bonhams.com and goodwood.com.

The sale will also be available on the Bonhams App, which provides registered bidders the opportunity to bid in real time online via Bonhams.com while watching the auctioneer and videos of cars on offer. Absentee and telephone bids are also encouraged.

Pre-sale viewing of all lots will take place at Goodwood on Friday 17 September 9am - 5pm and on Saturday 18 September, 9am onwards.
