Milano, 18th November, 2022
Maranello and Modena are recognised as the traditional homes of the Italian car industry, but Milan, most known as the city of fashion, has also been the birthplace of historic marques and carrozzerie, including of course, Alfa Romeo.
Seventy years of history of this iconic Italian motor manufacturer will be represented by no fewer than 13 of its classic and historic models at Bonhams debut Milano Sale on Friday 18 November, during Milano AutoClassica in the Fiera Milano Exhibition Centre (Rho).
Leading the group is the 1949 Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 SS Cabriolet Pininfarina, estimate €450,000-550,000. The post-war model was one of the most expensive cars of its time, owned by the global glitterati such as Prince Aly Khan, his then wife, Hollywood star Rita Hayworth and Prince Rainier of Monaco. Styled by the Pinin Farina design house in its most creative period, this two-seater cabriolet, with a top speed of 100mph, was first owned by the famous sugar company, Eridania of Genova.
Another highlight is a 1996 Alfa Romeo 155 D2 Competition Saloon, estimate €200,000-€240,000. This former JAS Motorsport Alfa Corse team car contested the International Touring Car Championship, driven by Italian racing star Stefano Modena to three podium places in the 1996 season. The car is now offered with an Abarth Heritage Certificate.
Also of note is the 1953 Alfa Romeo 1900C Coupé, Series 1, estimate €235,000-275,000. Promoted as 'the family car that wins races', the 1900 was the first all-new offering from Alfa Romeo in the post-war period, powered by a sporty twin-cam engine. The influential two-door coupé was created by Carrozzeria Touring and was the first Alfa Romeo to feature the marque's distinctive heart-shaped grille. The 1900C is eligible for the Mille Miglia, the world's 'most beautiful race'.
Other Milanese marvels in the sale include:
1969 ISO Rivolta Iso Grifo Targa, estimate €650,000 – 750,000. Produced by the Milanese 'bubble car' turned supercar manufacturer, the Grifo is one of the rarest and most coveted 'hybrid' American-engined Italian collector cars, originally designed by noted engineer Bizzarrini to rival – and beat - the likes of Ferrari.
Conceived by Carrozzeria Pavesi of Milan, fewer than 20 Targa variants were produced. This factory-built example was discovered as a barn find by the vendor 15 years ago. Restored by an ISO specialist and finished in verde chiaro metallizzato, with the 'must-have' Borrani wire wheels, the Targa is presented in outstanding condition.
2017 Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera Sciàdipersia Coupé, €420,000-€450,000. Carrozzeria Touring was first founded in Milan in 1926 and created some of the most beautiful cars of the post-war era, developing the Superleggera bodywork famously used on the Aston Martin DB4.
The only Sciàdipersia coupé built by the revived Carrozzeria was inspired by the three Maserati 5000 GTs of the late 1950s. Based on its contemporary Maserati Gran Turismo, powered the same 4.7-litre V8 engine, the Sciàdepersia has a completely redesigned 'arrow-like' body, with a vast glass roof. This one-off, first displayed at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show, is offered from its one and only owner, having covered 11,500kms from new.
The Milano Sale, Bonhams' first Italian motor car sale for five years, will be staged on the first day of the AutoClassica show in Milan, offering more than 50 collector cars, from vintage to modern and future classics.
Leading the car catwalk is a duo of Lamborghini supercars: a 2022 Aventador LP780-4 Ultimae Roadster, estimate €1,100,000-1,400,000, the final and most powerful edition of the model, which has now ceased production, and a tailor-made 2019 Aventador SVJ LP 770-4 Roadster Ad Personam, estimate €900,000-1,100,000. ' The sale takes place from 16.00 CEST on Friday 18 November, with previews on Thursday 17 November and Friday sale day: • Thursday 10.00 – 18.00 by invitation. • Friday 10.00 – 16.00, entry only with a ticket to the AutoClassica show
The Bonhams Milano Sale will also be on view to AutoClassica visitors over the weekend from 10.00 Friday to Sunday.
