DAIMLER SOVEREIGN COUPE 4,2 LITRE COUPE The launch of the Jaguar XJ6 in 1968 and its Daimler sister that followed in 1969, redefined expectations in the luxury car sector. The new model truly 'moved the goalposts', setting new standards in comfort, refinement and handling. A waiting list was quick to form and enthusiasm remained strong upon the introduction of the Series II cars in 1973. The standard or long wheelbase saloon models were joined later that year by a striking new variant, an elegant pillarless coupé, all being built on the short-wheelbase chassis and with black vinyl-covered roofs. Available with either the 4.2 litre straight-six XK unit or the fabulous 5.3 litre, V12, this handsome design retained the saloon's supple all-round independent coil and wishbone suspension, disc brakes and power steering. Performance was predictably strong with both variants reputedly able to exceed 120mph. Rarer than its Jaguar brother, just 1,677 Daimler Sovereign Coupés are thought to have been produced by the time production ended in 1978 with 613 built in 1977 and only six in the final year. Only 112 LHD Daimler Souvreign 4,2 litre models are said to have been produced what makes this car the ultimate example for any Jaguar / Daimler connoisseur or collector. The Daimler Sovereign was a name applied by to a sequence of luxury cars built by Jaguar but carrying the Daimler badge between 1966 and 1983 and were based on contemporary Jaguar body shells, chassis and engines. Jaguar Cars took over The Daimler Company in 1960. In 1975 Jaguar introduced a short-lived two-door pillarless coupé version of the Series II using the short wheelbase floorplan with Daimler versions using both six and twelve cylinder engines; the coupé has proved the most enduring. Built, as it was, in relatively low numbers but demonstrating a purity of profile that has become very sought after. This Daimler 4,2 litre was imported in Belgium at 17-05 1978. A few owners in Switzerland Germany and France owned this rare Daimler before it came to Holland in 2016. This car shows up very well.
