London, 07 December, 2019

Bonhams held their regular December sale at their Bond Street London headquarters building, during the afternoon of Saturday 07 December. The offerings comprised of 35 lots ranging in size from a miniscule 1959 FMR/Messerschmitt Tg500 bubble car to a leviathan 1965 Mercedes-Benz 600 Pullman Limousine, fully some 6 metres in length. Whilst the vehicles ranged in age from a 1929 Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 Supercharged SS Spider to a 2017 Ferrari F12 Berlinetta 70th Anniversary “The Scaglietti” edition in metallic blue.

The Alfa Romeo was offered from the estate of the late Michael Hirst, who had owned it since 1961, although it remained a “No Sale” in the auction.

The auction also featured some “cars of the stars” within the number, one of which was a1964 Bentley S3 Convertible conversion, owned by musician and TV presenter Jools Holland OBE DL. There were also a trio from the collection of jazz-funk singer-songwriter Jay Kay, comprising of a 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera 2.7 “lightweight” in bright orange, a 2004 Porsche Carrera GT and a 2016 Ferrari F12 TdF Berlinetta, both with more sombre finishes of silver and Grigio Ferro respectively. If a supercar was on your shopping list, then from the thirties there was a magnificent black and red 1935 Auburn 851 Supercharged Boat-Tail Speedster, whilst if something a little newer was more to your liking, then there was a 2006 Bugatti Veyron EB 16.4 also available, although neither found new custodians.

Apart from the Alfa Romeo 6C 1750, there were two other cars from relatively long and long term ownership offered upon their owners passing. The relatively long term one was a 1939 Frazer-Nash BMW 328 Roadster, which had been owned and actively raced by the late Alastair Pugh since he acquired it in 1988, but this was also a “No Sale” in the auction. The long term ownership example was the star lot in the auction, a 1961 Aston Martin DB4 GT “Lightweight”, chassis # DB4GT/0169/R, one of only nine examples understood to have been built to “Lightweight” specification.

It had two owners in the early sixties before being purchased by Malcolm Percy Cramp in 1965, remaining in his ownership until his recent passing. It was offered at “No Reserve” and did prove to be the star turn in an auction where a number of lots remained unsold, as it achieved £2.367 million on the fall of the gavel.
